Frequently asked questions

Sod Installation
Care Guide

Helping Your New Lawn Establish Strong Roots

The first few weeks after installation are the most important for your new sod. Proper watering, mowing, and maintenance will help your lawn develop a strong root system and establish into a healthy, long-lasting landscape.

Follow these recommendations to give your new lawn the best start possible.

The First 24 Hours

Begin Watering Imediately

Your new sod should be watered as soon as installation is complete. Since the sod has been recently harvested and installed, the roots need consistent moisture to begin growing into the prepared soil below.

During the first watering:

✓ Water thoroughly to ensure moisture reaches the soil beneath the sod
✓ Ensure all areas receive even coverage
✓ Pay special attention to edges, corners, and areas near hard surfaces
✓ Avoid allowing newly installed sod to dry out

Week 1: Establishing Roots

Frequent Watering Is Essential

During the first week, your main goal is to keep the sod and soil consistently moist while roots begin establishing. Typically watering 2-3 times per day making sure all areas receive even coverage and moisture reaches the soil beneath the sod.

New sod may require frequent watering depending on:

  • Temperature

  • Sun exposure

  • Wind conditions

  • Soil conditions

  • Time of year

Important:

During extra hot or dry weather, your sod may require additional watering to prevent stress and drying.

Signs your sod may need more water:

  • Grass blades begin curling or turning grey

  • Edges begin drying out.

  • Sod feels loose when walked near

  • Soil underneath feels dry

Weeks 2–3: Building A Strong Root System

Transition To Deeper Watering

As your sod begins rooting, gradually adjust your watering schedule to 1-2 times a day. On hot days sod may need additional water. The goal is to encourage roots to grow deeper into the soil, creating a stronger and more drought-resistant lawn.

Signs your sod is establishing:

✓ Sod feels firmly attached to the ground
✓ Grass remains upright and healthy
✓ Seams between pieces begin blending together
✓ New growth becomes visible

Week 3-4: First Mowing

When To Mow Your New Sod

Your first mow should only happen once your sod has started rooting and the grass has reached the proper height.

Before mowing:

✓ Ensure the lawn is firmly rooted
✓ Wait until grass reaches approximately 3–4 inches
✓ Avoid mowing when soil is wet
✓ Use a sharp mower blade

First mowing tips:

  • Remove no more than one-third of the grass height

  • Keep your mower height higher during establishment

  • Avoid heavy equipment or sharp turns that can disturb new roots

Long-Term Care and Watering

Maintaining A Healthy Lawn

Once your sod has fully established, transition into a regular lawn care routine.

Healthy lawns benefit from:

✓ Deep watering rather than frequent shallow watering
✓ Watering based on weather conditions
✓ Early morning watering when possible
✓ Adjusting watering during hot or dry periods

A consistent watering routine encourages deeper roots and improves your lawn's ability to handle heat and drought.
